Why choosing Groups matters so much

A lot of people think volume wins — more Groups equals more success. The truth is exactly the opposite. 10 quality Groups will outperform 100 low-quality ones. The reason is simple: if the audience isn't interested, it doesn't matter how many people see your post.

In this article I'm sharing the 7 criteria I use to pick Groups for my clients. They're based on hundreds of campaigns and data from 500+ businesses that use Natural Poster.

1. Group size

Group size is the first thing people look at, but it's misleading. More members isn't always better. Here's the breakdown I recommend:

  • Under 1,000 members — usually not worth the effort unless the audience is extremely niche
  • 1,000-10,000 members — the sweet spot. Active, not too noisy, high engagement
  • 10,000-50,000 members — good for broad reach, but your post can get "lost"
  • 50,000-100,000 members — excellent Groups if they stay active
  • Over 100,000 members — only worth it if your content is truly outstanding and can stand out in the flood of posts
💡
💡 Tip: 5 Groups of 5,000 members will always beat 1 Group of 25,000. Reason: in smaller Groups, your post captures a higher percentage of the audience.

2. Activity level

This is the single most important factor. A Group with 50,000 members but 2 posts a day is essentially dead. How do you check activity? Open the Group and look for:

  • How many posts go up per day? (aim for 10+ posts/day)
  • Are there comments and likes on those posts?
  • When was the last post? (more than a day ago is a bad sign)
  • Are there real conversations happening in the comments?

3. Relevance to your audience

The Group's audience has to be your audience. It's not just about the Group's name — it's about the real demographics of its members. Examples:

  • Own a restaurant? — look for "great local eats" or "restaurant recommendations" Groups
  • An attorney? — legal advice Groups, neighborhood Groups
  • Run a clothing store? — fashion Groups, shopping recommendation Groups
  • A real estate agent? — real estate Groups in your area
⚠️
Common mistake: joining generic Groups like "Small Business Owners" that are packed with spam and competitors. You're better off in more focused Groups.

4. Posting rules

Before you post, read the Group's rules (usually in the About section). Groups fall into a few types:

  • Open posting — anyone can post
  • Posting on specific days — e.g., "Thursday is promo day"
  • Posting requires approval — an admin has to approve each post
  • No posting at all — informational Groups only

Choose Groups with open posting or fixed posting days (and schedule your posts for those days).

5. Admin quality

A good admin means a good Group. Well-run Groups have higher-quality posts, less spam, and more real members. Signs of a good admin:

  • Removes abusive posts and spam
  • Answers member questions
  • Posts regular guidelines and tips
  • Enforces the rules consistently

6. Spam level

A Group full of spam is a bad sign. Your post will get lost in a sea of irrelevant content. How do you check? Scroll the Group for 30 seconds and watch for:

  • Are most posts ads?
  • Are the same people posting the same thing repeatedly?
  • Are there posts in other languages or clearly off-topic content?
  • Is there real engagement, or just automated-looking likes?

7. Real engagement

The most important criterion of all. Real engagement means real people commenting, asking questions, and showing interest. How do you measure it?

Open the Group's most popular posts and check:

  • How many comments are there? (aim for at least 5-10 on top posts)
  • Are the comments from real people or bots?
  • Is there real conversation, or just "thanks" and "saved"?
  • Do business owners actually reply to potential customers?

Quick checklist

Before you add a Group to your list, run it against this checklist:

  • ☐ Size: 5,000-50,000 members
  • ☐ At least 10 posts a day
  • ☐ The audience matches my target
  • ☐ Posting is allowed (I read the rules)
  • ☐ There's an active admin
  • ☐ Not too much spam
  • ☐ Real engagement on posts

If a Group passes 6 out of 7 criteria — it's worth your time. Fewer than that — move to the next one.

Natural Poster automatically helps you discover, filter, and manage Groups. The system scores every Group against these criteria and surfaces only the quality ones.
